Early Experiments

Luther Ocasio is an experiential designer and new media artist. He designs and constructs interactive installations and environments that encourage others to perceive the connections between the overlapping physical, psychological and digital spaces we inhabit. He draws attention to the subtle relationships of the spaces, states, species and technologies we interact with.
The installations blend sensor-driven generative art made in TouchDesigner with physical media such as biomaterial sculptures and ritual. The generative art is displayed via a variety of different mediums such as led screens, crt tvs, or projection mapping. Depending on the installation, interactions may involve touch, voice or biometrics, allowing participants to influence the artworks and incorporate real-world data into the media. By using biomaterials he reduces his reliance on wasteful materials and creates an organic and more approachable presence to the technology in the installations.
Informed by Thomas Leonard’s Nine Environments of You model, Luther approaches these overlapping environments through an ecological perspective. The hope is that participants consider the world around them as alive and responsive, recognizing relationships with other species in this world. His belief is that by shifting how people perceive these relationships they can deepen their understanding and appreciation for all life and what lies outside our perception.

Prayer Terminal is a techno-shrine built from dead media, sustainably harvested foliage, and a touch designer interactive architecture.
This pieces highlights how shrines are an ancient and analog technology used by our ancestors. Just as a keyboard allows us to interface with an operating system. A shrine allows us to interface with the universe and divine.
We used eleven CRT TVs, with the Zenith as the keystone, invasive vines collected from the forest, and preserved moss for the design of the shrine. Adding sensory elements such as tactile items to touch, and the diffusion of essential oils. Click learn more to read about the project interactive features
Interaction is powered by a playtron touch midi controller turning a piece of metal jewlery in the shape of this 3d model into a button controlling parameters such as camera movement, color, etc
Sense is an immersive, evolving audio-visual installation that transforms brainwave activity into responsive visual art. Participants wear a Muse S EEG headset, haptic vest, and Bluetooth Subwoofer headphones, immersing themselves in a guided sensory journey. The headphones and vest deliver deep, resonant vibrations, allowing users to feel the sound throughout their bodies, while real-time brainwave data shapes dynamic visuals in response to their mental state.
This project is one I made for my 30th birthday. Every photo you see comes from my personal collection of Polaroids taken over the past ten years. I scanned them into my computer and used them in @touchdesigner to create this photo sphere, with the help of @okamirufu.vizualizer. I then made it interactive using the #MediaPipe plugin from @blankensmithing and @domscott.art.
I see this as a way to show and tell memories in a more playful and dynamic way, instead of just swiping through photos on your phone. There are probably even more ways to push this project further and explore more nuanced effects.
Umwelt: noun; the world as it is experienced by a particular organism
I was excited when I found this word as it is a large part of my philosophy. I’m always thinking of the unique ways we see the world as a species and individual. Also how other species view the world. We allow our thoughts and imagination to be boxed in by our way of perception and forget there’s so many stimuli that can be perceived. Bees see in uv, and know where flower to go to, certain birds can tell gender through uv perception and flowers perceive mainly though aromatic particles to small to see with the naked eye.
This is an experiment into the unwelt of the brown bat which can be found here in Georgia. The visual is a rough imagination of echolocation. So when you make a large enough noise it cause the contour line visual to activate before going back to black. Many more experiments like this are coming
Here’s a fun piece made from a @crystaljowart tutorial for @interactiveimmersivehq, inspired by Kandinsky’s style and aesthetic. The tutorial opened up a lot of ideas for how I could translate my own drawing style into TouchDesigner.
